THE 2016 BAROSSA VALLEY VINTAGE OFFICIALLY 'DECLARED' BY THE BARONS OF BAROSSA - January 2016
The 2016 Barossa Vintage has been officially ‘declared’ by the Barons of Barossa in a colourful ceremony in Tanunda.

On a warm Sunday morning at the end of February and witnessed by the Barossa’s wine and business glitterati (and Barossa fräuleins in traditional German dress!)  - not to mention many drop-jawed tourists just happening by - the ceremony at the Tanunda Rotunda saw the Winemaker of the Year and the Vigneron of the Year declared (plus the honouring of others who have given a lifetime of service to the Barossa).

After the presentation of awards, the Barons got down to the fun part of their Declaration - the ceremonial crushing of the Vintage - and the ceremonial tasting of the grapes’ raw juice before hundreds of thousands of litres from this year’s growing season moves on to become what is expected to be an exceptional 2016 Vintage.

We captured all the pomp and ceremony and the fun of this year’s Declaration - see our photos below left.  And we spoke with some of the participants - in our short video below right (best viewed at its current size).

And, as the Barons say...”GLORY TO BAROSSA”!

 THE BAROSSA'S 2016 VINTAGE UNDERWAY! - summer 2015
The Barossa Valley is starting to rumble as wineries throughout the region gear up for the 2016 vintage this early February as vignerons in this world-renowned wine region look to the skies and balance their hard-won knowledge against fickle nature.

For the start of 2016, Mother Nature (so far) has been moderately kind -- the hot weather has tempered, and the remnants of Cyclone Stan provided a much needed drink for the Barossa’s wines as it swept across lower southern Australia.

Warm weather is predicted for the remains of February and into early March - and while there may be some rain, the moisture is not expected to be enough to damage the ripening berries.

For the latest we went to the Valley’s oldest vineyard, Langmeil Wines, where the world’s oldest stand of shiraz vines - now over 170 years old - are laden with sweet berries as they prepare to give up their fruit in March.
We asked Langmeil’s Cellar Master, Jonathon Bitter, for his predictions for the 2016 vintage, and Langmeil’s world famous Freedom Block Shiraz... Hear our quick podcast audio with Jonathon by clicking on the big red play button below!
